Silver Lining Chorus
Coventry
Your story
Silver Lining Chorus is an active group of 45 ladies from all over Coventry and Warwickshire who meet on a weekly basis to rehearse, enjoy and benefit from the delights of a capella harmony singing.
Group introduction
Our chorus was formed in 2000 by Sara Jackson with nine members. Since then we have grown and currently have 45 active members of various ages and all walks of life. We compete annually at the national Ladies Association of a British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) and are proud to be currently ranked ninth in the country. We have also received a silver medal at the International Chorus Competition in Spain, and were placed first at the Dudley Music Festival last year. We achieved this through a mixture of good coaching, great leadership and commitment and hard work from our Chorus members.
Some of our more high profile events over the last year have been performing at The Belgrade Theatre in the Diversity Rocks Concert, and at the Royal Spa Centre in the Sheer Harmony Concert. However, we also love singing for local community events and have raised significant sums of money for local charities. The Alzheimer's Association has been our chosen charity for the last two years and each year we perform at the regional Alzheimer's Christmas service as well as the Myton Hospice Light up a Life service.
We are self funded and raise money to cover our costs with events such as: ‘Come Dine With Me’, games evenings, concerts and fashion shows. These evenings have the added advantage of allowing us to mix socially and as a result, new friendships are formed and there is a strong support network within the Chorus.
How would this funding have an impact on your community?
We regularly run a free course to encourage other women to come along and experience the joys of singing in harmony. Our last ‘Love to Sing’ course was very successful and as a result we now have seven new members. A big part of the group is competing at National and International level, which gives the women new skills and confidence through a unique shared experience. The cost of new costumes for our ever-growing Chorus can be quite high so any funding we receive would help towards this cost and allow us to continue expanding, thereby giving more women the chance to share our love of singing.
"Over the last few years we have steadily been increasing our membership, alongside a real drive to increase and develop our skill set as performers. This has seen us achieve ‘top ten’ status in national competitions – something each singer has taken great pride in achieving. Alongside this, we love getting out into the community and sharing music with a wide range of people – whether through formal concerts, or more informal entertainment opportunities such as local festivals or charitable events.
Our ‘brand’ (informally known as ‘Team Silver’) brings together such a wide range of individuals, from all different backgrounds, skills, and abilities, and corporate image is really important to help identify and unite us.
